A transgender student played on the girls tennis team on Tuesday, breaking a contentious laws passed by Gov. Florida’s state sport board, which fined the high school and placed it on probation. The Legislature and Ron DeSantis.
More infractions could result in harsher penalties, so the Florida High School Athletic Association fined Monarch High$ 16,500, mandated that the main and athletic director attend guidelines seminars, and put the suburban Fort Lauderdale class on parole for 11 months. For 11 weeks, the organization even prohibited the girl from taking part in boys ‘ activities.
Transgender girls and women are prohibited from competing on common school groups designed for student athletes identified as girls at birth under the 2021 laws, which proponents dubbed” The Fairness in Women’s Sports Act.”
The Broward County School District was informed of the student’s contribution by an unidentified tipster last month, and she was dismissed from the staff. The student was a 10th grader who had participated in 33 games over the previous two seasons. Thousands of Monarch students protested her treatment two weeks ago by leaving the classroom.
To protect the student’s protection, The Associated Press is not naming her.
Florida passed legislation to protect women ‘ sports under the direction of Governor Ron DeSantis, and we will not tolerate any school that breaks this law, Education Commissioner Manny Diaz said in a statement. ” We applaud the Florida High School Athletic Association’s quick action to ensure there are severe repercussions for this unlawful behaviour.”
DeSantis ‘ office declined to comment. On Tuesday, the government was in Iowa running for the Republican nomination for president. His passing of the rules and other similar legislation has become a battle pillar.
The woman’s family, Jessica Norton, a Monarch data specialist, went public last year. Tuesday, she re-released a statement describing her daughter’s vacation as “direct attempts to harm” the young woman.
The Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ+ right business that has been assisting the home, stated in a statement that the Association’s state to guarantee student athletes equal opportunities and the laws prohibiting trans women from participating in sports with their peers “does not change the fact that this is unconstitutionally rooted.”
The group’s litigation strategist, Jason Starr, stated that” the careless disregard for the welfare of our client and her family, as well as all transgender individuals across the State, will not be ignored.”
She has identified as feminine since before elementary school and has been using a woman’s name since second grade, according to court documents submitted in the federal lawsuit she is suing in 2021.
She started taking hormone at the age of 13 and hormone blockers at years 11 to start puberty as a girl. Additionally, her identity has been altered on her baby document. The petition was dismissed by a judge last month, but the family has until next month to update it so that it can be reevaluated.
In a brief speech, Broward County Public Schools acknowledged receiving the association’s decision and stated that its own investigation is still ongoing. The region has ten days to file an appeal.
The organization also mandated that Monarch Principal James Cecil and Athletic Director Dione Hester attend rules conformity seminars over the course of the following two summers, and that by July, the school may sponsor an on-campus staff seminar.
Recently, the school district suspended the tennis coach pending the results of its research and partially reassigned Cecil, Hester, Norton, and the assistant sport director.
Norton thanked the protesters and individuals who had stood up for the group after their reassignments.
According to Norton in next week’s declaration,” The outpouring of love and help from our community… has been inspiring, noble, and brave.” The light guiding us through this darkness has been so joyful for our home as we have witnessed our group’s tolerance and display of love.
