In his most recent performance, Dave Chappelle made remarks about the Israel-Hamas conflict, but he is now turning to a source of earlier criticism. The 50-year-old comedian had previously drawn criticism for his comments about the transgender community in “The Closer,” but that didn’t stop him from adding similar commentary to “The Dreamer,” his most recent Netflix special that debuted on New Year’s Eve, per Variety. Chappelle revealed in the new special that he had once visited Jim Carrey while the latter was filming the 1999 film “Man on the Moon,” which was about the late artist Andy Kaufman. Chappelle remarked, “That’s how transgender people make me feel,” in reference to Carrey posing as Kaufman while he was there.
Chappelle then launched into a prolonged rant about how he was done making fun of the transgender community before launching into several trans-themed jabs. “You’ve come to the wrong show,” he insisted, “if you guys came here to this show tonight thinking I’m going to make fun of those people afterwards.” “I’m not f—ing with those people again. Maybe three or four times now, but that’s all.” “You want to know why I’m tired of talking about them,” he said, adding that he was “tired” of that particular discussion. “Because these people behaved in a way that made me want to laugh. Well, that’s ridiculous. I don’t need you. I’m about to get a completely new perspective.”
According to USA Today, Chappelle subsequently switched gears to target the disabled community as a new subject. “I’m making all kinds of disabled jokes tonight,” he said. “I love punching up, and they’re not as organized as the gays.” He made fun of former GOP Rep. Madison Cawthorn, who is paralyzed. Chappelle noted, “Then I just walked away,” and claimed to have met Cawthorn. “He couldn’t do what I wanted him to see me do. I left.” What is Variety’s opinion of the latest uproar? “Dave Chappelle might want to experiment with some new material now.” Gray News reports that Chappelle stormed out of one of his shows in Hollywood, Florida, on Wednesday after a fan broke his no-phone rule during the performance. In the meantime, we’re learning what does annoy the comedian.
