In his new Netflix special “The Dreamer,” Dave Chappelle asserted that he wasn’t “doing trans jokes” before joking about the trans community.
In his most recent Netflix special, “The Dreamer,” Dave Chappelle continues to make fun of transgender people.
“The Dreamer,” which debuted on Sunday, December 31, focuses on Chappelle’s early times and his rise to fame in the entertainment industry. However, the comedian, who had recently received criticism for making remarks about trans people, immediately changed the subject to making jokes about the trans community.
He told the audience just a few moments into the new show that trans people “make him feel” like he has to go along with them, as if they were method actors like Jim Carrey’s portrayal of Andy Kaufman from the 1999 film “Man on the Moon.”
He continued, “You guys came to the wrong show if you came here tonight expecting me to make fun of those people once more.” “I’m no longer f**king with those people. The trouble wasn’t worth it. I won’t say anything negative about them. That’s all, maybe three or four times now. I’m sick of bringing them up. And you’re curious as to why I’m sick of bringing them up. Because these people behaved in a way that made me want to laugh. Well, that is absurd. I don’t need you.”
Chappelle asserted that because he is now focusing on disabled people, a “whole new perspective is coming.”
“I’m doing all the disabled jokes now. They’re never as well-organized as the gays, and I enjoy punching them in the face.”
Chappelle then went back to his original thoughts regarding the transgender community.
“To be completely honest,” he said, “I’ve been working to mend my relationship with the transgender community because I don’t want them to think I dislike them. Do you know how I’ve been fixing it? I wrote a play. I did, because I am aware that gay people enjoy plays.”
“Although the play is really sad, it is moving. It’s about a trans Black girl with the unfortunate word ‘n***a.’ It’s a tear-jerker, really. She dies of loneliness at the end of the play because white liberals don’t know how to approach her.”
Chappelle has drawn criticism in recent years for his regular remarks about the transgender community, such as in his 2021 Netflix special “The Closer,” where he referred to himself as “team TERF” and made crude jokes about trans women’s genitalia.
Employee demonstrations and uprisings were started at the time “The Closer” was released. Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO of Netflix, initially defended the comedian but eventually claimed that he “screwed up” in response to the controversy.
In the midst of the criticism, Chappelle complained about “cancel culture” despite hosting sold-out performances and maintaining his relationship with Netflix.
Chappelle later discussed his stage attack at the Hollywood Bowl in 2022 in “The Dreamer,” telling the audience that “a trans man” had attacked him.
He claimed to have read an article about how his use of LGBTQ+ jokes had “triggered” the perpetrator. Knowing the attacker was gay, Chappelle continued, “He could have been upset.”
Chappelle chimed in, “If I ever went to jail, I hoped it would be in California because I’d tell the judge that I ‘identify as a girl’ so I could serve time in a ‘women’s prison.'”
“You know what I’m doing as soon as I get inside,” he said. “Before I push your motherf**king smile out, give me your fruit cocktail, b***h. Come here and swallow this lady d**k I got; I’m a woman, just like you. I’m a woman, don’t make me explain myself.”
