Right-wing protesters are expected to react negatively to the United Nations children’s agency UN Women for appointing transgender model and author Munroe Bergdorf as its “UK Champion.”
Bergdorf was given the title in November 2023, but anti-trans groups have only recently become outraged.
One of Britain’s most well-known trans voices, Bergdorf, was named as the first “UK Champion” by UN Women UK in November. The organization focuses on the empowerment of women through gender equality.
Since then, a text opposing her appointment has been signed by at least 17 anti-trans campaign organizations, including Fair Play for Women, Sex Matters, Transgender Trend, and the Children’s Rights Network.
The letter expresses their “dismay and sadness” at the choice, adding that they believe she is “unsuitable in every regard,” according to The Times.
The letter also brought attention to the 36-year-old’s reported previous “homophobic and racist comments on social media.”
Bergdorf was fired by the cosmetics giant in 2017 after she posted on Facebook, “Honestly, I don’t have energy to talk about the racial violence of white people anymore.” Yes, ALL white people.
She claimed that after the incident, being fired “opened a narrative,” and the LGBTQ+ community stood by her the entire time.
The well-publicized advocacy of Munroe Bergdorf is pro-women. The letter continues, “This woman has objected to girls mentioning our female bodies.”
Bergdorf responded by saying she didn’t come to her appointment “lightly” and that it’s “rare we get to see transgender people have a seat or voice at these tables.”
Bergdorf has worked hard to advance transgender rights in the UK, outspokenly criticizing dangerous “debates” about trans lives and warning society about anti-LGBTQ+ hatred.
Bergdorf made an appearance on Loose Women after the tragic death of trans teenager Brianna Ghey and clearly described how dangerous discussion causes trans people to “pay with their lives.”
According to Bergdorf, trans people are at risk due to the “toxic environment” and “silly debates” that plague the UK.
Bergdorf declared in April 2023 that she is “no longer willing to live under an authoritarian state that is intent on reducing transgender people to second-class citizens.” Three months later, she remarked that Generation Z is experiencing “the most misogynistic time in recent memory” and forewarned that things might be about to get significantly worse.
In a stinging London Trans + Pride speech that same month, she criticized the Tory government for “inducing social panic” regarding the lives of transgender people.
Bergdorf called on British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to eventually outlaw conversion therapy in November, along with a number of other celebrities, including actor and comedian Mae Martin and TV star Rylan. It was revealed that Sunak intended to do so due to “intense” lobbying by anti-trans Tory MP Miriam Cates.
Her ongoing political role has not gone unnoticed. The trans activist praised Bergdorf for her “contribution to British society” in the music video for ANOHNI and the Johnsons’ first one in seven years.
“She consistently impresses me with her elegant kindness. Munroe’s moral courage and respect serve as a compass,” said ANOHNI.
