Florida trans activists protest a law that forbids gender changes on driver’s licenses.

In opposition to a new concept that would make it illegal to change gender on licenses in order to reflect someone’s gender identity, transgender activists in Florida held die-in protests at drivers’ registration offices all over the Sunshine State.

According to video posted to social media, dozens of people showed up on Friday night wearing transgender flags or orange road-safe shirts and lying down in corridors in Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Gainesville. The demonstrations were organized by the organizations Prism, Youth Action Fund, Equality Florida, Hope Community Center, GLSEN Central Florida, and SPEKTRUM Health.

In a press release, Prism stated that “participants did step die-ins to emphasize the damaging effects of efforts to remove the trans community’s legal recognition.”

Following a recent ruling prohibiting trans people from changing the sex on their driver’s licenses or state identification, the campaigners staged the protests.

People with licenses that misrepresent their natural sex will face “criminal and civil penalties, including cancellation, suspension, or renewal of his or her vehicle license,” according to Robert Kynoch, deputy executive director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, in a memo to county tax collectors.

According to The Advocate, protesters who were protesting at one DMV could be seen lining up against the wall and holding paper tombstones with the words “Killed by Ron DeSantis” and “Killed by the DMV” on them.

According to Kynoch’s memo, “the term ‘gender’ has previously and widely been understood to be a synonym for ‘sex,’ which is determined by innate and immutable biological and genetic traits. It does not refer to the individual person or their internal sense of their gender role or recognition.

Residents of Florida used to be able to change their gender on their registration by submitting a court order, changing their name, or requesting medical advice on gender transition treatment.
