The United Nations Human Rights Committee ( HRC ) criticized the United States ‘ record on LGBTQ+ rights after reviewing its track record in terms of civil and political rights, according to human rights watch.
The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights ( ICCPR ) was ratified by the US in 1992. The HRC examines the laws and policies of nations that have ratified the convention every four years to determine where they fall short of it.
This was the nation’s earliest examination in nearly ten years due to the COVID pandemic.
A statement describing how many states have violently rolled back LGBTQ+ privileges in recent years was submitted to the council in advance of the evaluation, which was published on November 3 by the LGBT Rights Program at Human Rights Watch, the University of Miami School of Law, and partner companies.
The committee’s final observations raised concerns about legislation restricting discussions of civilization, slavery, physical orientation, and gender identity in schools as well as those limiting transgender peoples ‘ access to healthcare, sports, or public apartments.
