ORLANDO, Florida- This week is Transgender Awareness Week, which promotes knowledge of trans people and addresses problems the community is dealing with.
Transgender Awareness Week, which runs from November 13 to 19, culminates on November 20, which honors the recollection of those killed as a result of anti-gay discrimination.
Transgender activist Gwendolyn Ann Smith established TDOR in 1999 as a memorial to Rita Hester, who passed away in 1998.

Hester worked educating persons about trans issues in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was a well-known member of the community.
Rita was stabbed 20 times in her room on November 28, 1998.
Police have still not located Rita’s killer ( s ) after more than 20 years.
The goal of” Transgender Day of Remembrance” is to draw attention to the harm that violence and anti-gay hatred cause. I am not unfamiliar with the need to defend our rights, and the right to arise first and foremost. It is crucial that those we lose are remembered and that we continue to fight for justice because so many people are trying to remove trans individuals, sometimes in the most terrible ways possible.

At least 25 transgender and female non-conforming individuals will be killed in the US in 2023, according to The Human Rights Campaign.
320 transgender and gender-dividend people were killed international in 2023, according to a recent report.
The Trans Murder Monitoring statement follows annual media-reported deaths; this year’s review includes fatalities between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023.
94 % of those killed were transgender women or transgender individuals.

On this day of memory for transgender people, I urge my fellow Americans to resist hatred and to pause for a moment to remember the lives of those Americans who were lost to love and senseless violence.
