By urging the federal government to carry out all 29 recommendations from MP Randall Garrison’s White Paper on the Status of Trans and Gender Diverse People, which was released earlier this year, Canadian unions commemorate Trans Day of Remembrance ( TDOR ). The 29 recommendations will improve Canada’s transgender and gender-difference individuals ‘ legal, political, and socioeconomic status.
Every year on November 20, TDOR is observed. The TDOR design for this year,” Trans Equality Now,” emphasizes the pressing need for legislation that safeguards and advances the rights of the transgender community. Violence and discrimination against trans and gender-diverse people are on the rise and are getting worse, including a drive by liberal politicians for risky and unfair legislation.
” Right-wing decision-makers are using dog whistling methods to attack transgender and gender-diverse people.” According to Bea Bruske, president of the Canadian Labour Congress ( CLC ), they are using human rights as a wedge to divert voters from their failure to address the pressing issues of affordability and other issues facing Canadian families. The effects of their activities, however, is quite real and dangerous for transgender and gender-discriminate people, especially young people. This is true even as they play politics with person’s lives. As they pledged to do in Bill C-16, the federal government has a responsibility to uphold transgender rights in Canada. These steps are n’t worth the paper they’re written on if there is no practical way to put them into practice.
The fall of so-called “parental rights” policies and regulations in Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, which undercuts the safety of transgender and gender-diverse children, is a significant increase in established transphobic violence in 2023. Similar legislation has received attention from the administrations of Ontario and Alberta.
Another Conservative leaders across the nation who want to imitate them have made the unsettling precedent set by these governments worse. According to Larry Rousseau, Executive Vice-President of the CLC, Scott Moe even used the with provision to force through this backward legislation in Saskatchewan. This demonstrates that the man is aware that what he is doing is not only inappropriate but also illegal. To guard trans and gender-diverse people from farther attacks by leaders who are robbing them of their human rights, we urgently need national action to take place.
A noticeable rise in crime against various gender expression has also been seen in Canada and throughout North America, including right-wing protests and threats to stop drag-queen story events and target schools, school boards, and libraries.
Trans and gender-difference neighborhoods even experience remarkable social and economic disparities in addition to bias. More than 1 in 5 non-binary people lived in poverty in 2020, more than half the national level, and trans ladies and men were more likely to experience hunger than their cis counterparts. Hunger, lack of accommodation, and food insecurity are among the main causes of worsening health outcomes. These results are even worse for transgender persons.
While Canada’s first-ever 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan was released by the government last year, little more work still needs to be done.
Federal officials “need to take action; it’s not enough for them to appreciate what is going on.” We are aware that anti-2SLGBTQI+ regulations and crime have never been seen before in 2023, according to Bruske. People in Canada who are transgender and gender differentcannot afford to keep waiting. To address these problems, the federal government may act immediately.
