A reported plan that will allow trans women to be considered for entrance has sparked new opposition at Saint Mary’s, an Indiana university for Catholic women, this week.
The Observer, a student newspaper at Notre Dame, reported on Wednesday that Saint Mary’s President Katie Conboy had sent an email to individuals outlining the schools ‘ non-discrimination scheme, which had already been approved in June. The school will begin taking trans applicants into consideration for registration in 2024, according to The Observer‘s contact.
” On June 23, the Board of Trustees of the College approved a revision to the Saint Mary’s non-discrimination plan.” According to a university director to Newsweek, this update changes our language regarding the candidates we will consider for admission as well as how we support employees across the gender expression spectrum.
” Saint Mary’s will consider academic applicants whose legal gender is female or who constantly live and identify as people” in terms of entrance starting in the fall of 2024.
Transgender problems have remained a conservation concern over the past few months, with some expressing opposing viewpoints. Many conservatives have criticized transgender people, and some Republican-led states have attempted to pass legislation restricting minors ‘ access to gender-affirming medical care.
On the other hand, President Joe Biden recently spoke on the Transgender Day of Remembrance and said,” There is no place for hatred in America, and no one should be discriminated against just for being themselves,” expressing support for the LGBTQ community.
Some people criticised Saint Mary’s College on social media immediately after the The Observer record, pointing out that it is one of the few female Catholic educational institutions in the United States.
What a horrifying treachery of its purpose and name. Did St. Mary’s therefore exclude and expel ladies who identify as men in its homage to the gods of sex personality? On X, originally Online, Ed Whelan wrote.
” As I told the @DailySignal, this choice is a rejection of God and his style,” said X person @clareanneath.
” I’m greatly disappointed as a @saintmarys alumni in this choice,” wrote X person @LisaBEzell. The institution has abandoned its Christian mission.
Similar to this, X person @ShannonPahls stated,” I selected @saintmarys because of its goal of serving as a Catholic women’s academy.” That has been completely abandoned by this choice. incredibly dissatisfied with my old school.
Paula Farina, a X user, wrote,” Good for St. Mary’s,” expressing support for the university. I hope this pattern keeps going. I am aware of how hospitable and accessible college-age individuals are today. It is incredibly motivating.
We are aware that some people do not believe with this plan update, according to the Saint Mary’s director to Newsweek.
” Some of our current students, their families, and alumni have contacted us to express their worries. We even know that there are others who have written and called to let the institution know they support the more diverse plan.
