Taking Protection: Transgender immigrants find group, services, and safety in Vermont.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX )- The promises of comparative security, essential services, and what they see as the state’s reputation for sensitivity have drawn an influx of trans people and their families to Vermont.

Newcomers claim that the federal upsurge in anti-transgender hatred and the passage of laws that limit gender-affirming treatment are to blame for their departure from their home states. Vermont’s laws providing proper safeguards to LGBTQ+ people, the wide range of support services offered in the Green Mountains, and a health care system that is regarded as accommodating to trans people are all major factors contributing to its growing reputation as an shelter.
