Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), a queer-liberation organization chapter in El Paso, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4), is launching an innovative art exhibit on Thursday that will tour the state and raise awareness of trans and nonbinary communities.
On Thursday, the El Paso Museum of History will host the premiere of Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Nonbinary People and Their Families. The program will include a Q&A with several writers, as well as listeners, ribbon cutting, and other events.
“The Authentic Selves show explores the many elements of gender identity and variance by sharing important reports, uplifting trans, nonbinary, and gender-fluid people with beautiful images and first-person accounts,” according to PFLAG El Paso.
The works honor a variety of transgender and intersex people’s distinctive and encouraging viewpoints, opinions, and life experiences.
According to the organizers, Authentic Selves seeks to “evoke empathy and compassion to make the world a safer place for transgender and gender-nonconforming people” by promoting equitable spaces at all social levels and reiterating the value of diversity.
According to PFLAG El Paso in a statement, “Our 2SLGBTQIA community has endured so much at the hands of biased state leaders in Texas. Texas has seen the filing of 76 anti-2SLGBTQIA bills as of 2023. Collectively, we may dispel harmful prejudices and spread the love and beauty that exist in trans and gender-nonconforming populations across Texas.
Until January 6, 2024, the first exhibit, a collaboration between PFLAG El Paso and the El Paso Museum of History, will be on display. After that, it will tour the state and “contribute” to the effort to destroy prejudice and intolerance’s destructive power.
On December 7, at 5 p.m., the Juan & Linda Uribe Community Gallery Pop-up Exhibition space at the El Paso Museum of History will host the opening ceremony for Authentic Selves.
Participating authors may read from Zoom during the event, which will then be followed by a Q&A session, and ribbon cutting.
El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank invites the group to a behind-the-scenes empty house.
