In the midst of a disagreement over the group’s position on sex and gender, the Green Party has severed established relations with one of its largest member organizations.

Senior Green Party Women ( GPW) members assert that the organization was “disaffiliated” due to the promotion of “gender-critical views.”

A Green Party spokesman claimed that the GPW was suspended for legal grounds.

The Green Party is split on how it views its approach to transgender rights.

According to the group’s recognized position, it supports trans people and helps self-determination as a means of changing legal sex.

However, there are ongoing conflicts with people who hold gender-critical ideas, such as the inviolability of a person’s sex.

The GPW was disaffiliated by the Green Party for delaying its planned Autumn 2021 council vote until January 2022, according to documents the BBC has access to. This violated group bylaws and rendered the team’s leadership ineffective.

The election was held very soon, according to the GPW. In a report seen by the BBC, the group’s former commission referred to the justification for its disaffiliation as” spurious,” claiming that the party had discovered the technical basis for an “politically motivated” attack.

The decision was referred to as a” practical means for the ruling body to shut down the women’s party” by Zoe Hatch, the most lately elected co-chair of the GPW and now suspended from the group.

Emma Bateman, a former GPW co-chair who was quickly kicked out of the party, claimed that the disaffiliation was an attempt to “demonstrate that people breaking the rules may be punished.”

Ms. Walton claimed that while serving as co-chair, she had been bullied by members of the group.

She remarked,” I have never in my life seen such vile and inappropriate behavior from within Green Party People.”

Dehumanization, harassment, intimidation, and belittling are examples of such behavior. It is crucial to emphasize that although this is a very small majority of people, it does have an unjustifiable effect on the group overall.

Ms. Walton expressed her gratitude to the BBC when she said,” I’m actually glad that this decision has put a stop to this problem and gives us all the opportunity to move on.”

The Green Party stated that GPW will be able to rejoin the group as soon as they “meet the democratic requirements,” but they did not offer a timeline for when this might occur.

Trans men are men, transgender women are women, and non-binary names exist and are appropriate, according to the Green Party’s rights and responsibilities website.

The party also favors removing the requirement for a Gender Reassignment Certificate ( GRC ) in order to make it simpler for trans people to change their legal status.

However, there is still some anxiety among the group.

Some members of the Green Party claim that the group supports single-sex rooms in hospitals in its policy documents and that guidelines on the rights of trans people to access women—only spaces remain ambiguous—are a key point of contention in the debate over trans rights.

Senior members of the GPW were attempting to establish a Green Women’s Declaration, which emphasizes natural sex as the foundation for womens ‘ right.

A movement by the GPW to alter the Green Party’s law to contain safeguards for sex-based rights was rejected last year. Critics claimed that because of the manner it was written, trans people were not covered.
