Leigh Finke, a state representative from Minnesota, declared anti-trans violence an “epidemic” on Thursday in response to the discovery of the dying transgender woman’s headshot wound at the Minneapolis light rail station.
According to prison documents reviewed by HuffPost, Damarean Bible, 25, was charged with second-degree crime following the Nov. 29 revelation of slain 38-year-old Savannah Williams.
According to a possible reason statement obtained by HuffPost, Minneapolis police were called to an allegation of an unresponsive man in the yard.
Williams and the gentleman later identified as Bible were seen nearby just before the shooting, according to police, who reported hearing gunfire at around 5:45 a.m.
Officers added that Bible was seen leaving the yard by himself.
He was taken to jail after being detained at his house, where he called his dad and allegedly admitted to killing Williams.
The probable cause statement stated that the man” stated he felt sorry for killing the victim and knew that I was n’t God, but I had to do it.”
Police claim that Bible met Williams while passing a van house and asked him if he wanted to have sex.
According to the probable cause statement, Bible informed the officers that while Williams engaged in oral sex with him, he became” suspicious” of her and shot her in the head.
According to prison information, Bible is scheduled to appear in court on January 9.
Finke, the first openly transgender lawmaker to represent Minnesota, stated at a press conference on Thursday that passing legislation is insufficient to address what she referred to as the “epidemic of anti-trans crime.”
She declared,” Our communities wo n’t be secure until every one of our neighbors recognizes our humanity, appreciates who we are, and embraces this lovely community that loves and is deserving of love.”
Williams ‘ girl Gabrielle Stillday also stated at the press conference that she did not think her sister deserved to be killed.
Stillday claimed that her daughter’s murder was not caused by her sex, history, or criminal history. Stillday claimed that her girl, a” two- heart trans woman,” had been the victim of an hate crime on her GoFundMe page where she was attempting to raise money for funeral expenses.
Williams ‘ passing highlights the “dangers and discrimination” faced by transgender people, according to a statement from the Minnesota House’s Queer Legislative Caucus, of which Finke is enrolled.
It stated that Savannah’s passing may be considered a singular occurrence. Even in the face of indescribable loss, transgender people are dehumanized and marginalized throughout their lives as a result of their society.
At least 33 transgender and female nonbinary people were killed over the past year, with 69.7 % of those deaths occurring to trans people, according to statistics from the Human Rights Campaign.
