Alberta’s Premier Danielle Smith stated on Friday that single-sex spaces will not be subject to any restrictions in future legislation on gender policies, but that transgender people who have not yet transitioned should “show modesty” there.
After her act is approved, Smith was asked by facilitator Andrew Lawton if biologically male prisoners who identify as women may become permitted in women’s prisons in Alberta at a debate at the Canada Strong and Free Conference on Friday in Ottawa.
“At the moment, I don’t see anything in Alberta that would make me feel like I need to do something about this. But, I’m not going in that direction,” she said.
In January, Smith made a list of gender policy proposals that included plans to stop children from socially transitioning to a different gender, from using different names or pronouns, or from medically transitioning to a different gender without their parents’ knowledge. She added that she would look into whether specific sports teams would only be available to biological female athletes.
Smith told Lawton that she had spoken with a transgender person who had not entirely transitioned and who wanted to spend a day at the salon with her girls without entering the people’s locker room about public restrooms and change rooms.
“The issue is modesty,” she said. “You shouldn’t be exposing yourself in female spaces if you have not fully transitioned because no one should know. You should either be behind a restroom barn, or you should display modesty.”
Smith said she is aware of the importance that people place equal protection for their privacy, particularly in prone areas.
Smith’s position differs from Pierre Poilievre, the head of the Conservative Party, who earlier stated that “female spaces should only be for females, not for natural males,” while also recognizing that the provinces or cities are largely in charge of making the decisions.
What a potential Conservative government might do, according to Poilievre at the time, is unclear what restrictions on public restrooms or changing rooms might be. He neglected to mention correctional facilities that the federal government may regulate.
“But naturally, female sports, sexual change rooms, sexual bathrooms should be for women — not for biological men,” Poilievre said in February.
Conservatives across the country have been gaining popularity by ensuring parental participation in transitioning adolescents. When Smith said, “You may be out of your entire school community, and the only people who are not allowed to know are your parents,” she received a round of applause on Friday.
At its most recent protocol, Smith’s United Conservative Party members voted in favor of a resolution that demanded keeping biological men out of adult prisons. The solution is not conditional on the state.
Premier Blaine Higgs of New Brunswick, who was the first leading to raise the question of parental consent for juveniles changing their names and adjectives in school, also touched on the subject during his own sit-down with Lawton on Thursday, claiming that his place had been badly described as “far right.”
“Isn’t it amazing that in today’s world, the ‘far right’ is having parents who are involved”? he said.
Higgs, who is running for re-election this year, acknowledged that his government may be impacted by the issue of parental rights, but he said he is willing to risk his political future by supporting a scheme that he claims is in line with Liberal principles.
Smith reaffirmed her commitment to knowledge, while referencing a current assessment of the medical books on gender service for people under the age of 18 that was published by cardiologist Dr. Hilary Cass in the UK, the Cass Review.
There is “remarkably poor” data on gender-affirming health interventions, according to the review, which concluded that children have been let down by a lack of study. It even points to the “toxicity” of the conversation around sex, which has muzzled health care experts.
“But, we’re watching what the emerging scientific data is in the world,” she said. “This is science. The left says they believe in knowledge. This is how scientific appears.
Smith did not specify whether there would be a similar conversation process before introducing her bill on gender policies, but she did state that her government is constantly in contact with the people and that it would get some feedback as it puts the policies into practice.
