According to numerous reports, a person who admitted to killing his girlfriend after learning she was trans may serve close to 50 years in prison.
Taya Ashton, 20, was shot and killed in her Maryland home in July 2021 by DeAllen Price, 29, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and using a firearm in the course of an act of violence. DC News Today, WUSA, and WTOP were the media outlets that first covered the court event.
According to the reports, Price may serve the next 48 years in prison after receiving a 60-year jail sentence and having his sentence extended by 12 years.

According to Waldrup, the sentence was “chilling.”
The Human Rights Campaign issued a statement not long after Ashton’s death.
According to Lindsey Clark, an HRC associate director for the Transgender Justice Initiative, “Taya was just at the beginning of her life—a life that she deserved to live to the fullest.” It is unacceptable that black trans women are still being killed in this country. Everyone needs to speak up quickly, including friends, family, community leaders, and allies. All transgender and gender non-conforming people must be freed from the stigma and violence they experience.
