According to a recent Human Rights Campaign record, 33 transgender and gender-nonconforming people have been killed by crime in the United States since last year’s commemoration of the event on November 20, 2022.
According to the statement released on Monday, 26 of those individuals died in 2023.
In recent years, LGBTQ activists have raised the alarm about the rise in anti-trans and gender-based assault, but this year in particular, when the Human Rights Campaign declared a national state of emergency for Transgender people in the U.S. in June.
One of the largest LGBTQ+ civil rights organizations in the country, the Human Rights Campaign, said Kelly Robinson that the outbreaks of violence against transgender and gender-nonconforming people is a federal horror and an embarrassment. ” A community that denigrates and devalues anyone who dares to question the gender binary is the cause of every life taken.”
According to the American Civil Liberties Union, more than 500 anti-EQL charges were introduced to state legislature across the nation this year, many of which targeted the transgender community. More than 80 of these bills passed into law. The HRC reported that there are record-breaking numbers of payments.
According to Homeland Security officials, there has been an increase in attacks and threats against LGBTQ people, including bombings of LGBTQ-supporting institutions like Pride parades and bring shows.
In a statement released on Monday, President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to LGBTQ justice in America and denounced the significant effects of crime on the transgender community.
He asserted that there is no room for hatred in America and that no one should face discrimination just for being themselves. Although each of these deaths is tragic, the correct number of victims is probably even higher because the bulk of those who were targeted were women of color.
Black trans women made up the majority of the victims killed in the previous year, who were mostly people of color. According to the HRC report, more than 78 % of the victims were under the age of 35, and only 66.6 % of cases involved a known perpetrator.
According to the HRC document, nearly half of those subjects were murdered by a friend, family member, or close friend.
More than 2,400 anti-LGBT hate crimes were reported by the FBI in 2022, which is the highest number ever recorded. Between 2021 and 20, this number increased by more than 32 %. According to the FBI, 21 % of hate crimes involved anti-LGBT attacks, and 4 % involved gender identity.
According to the HRC, not all states release their findings on hate crimes, and bias situations that are n’t recognized by the law are not included in the FBI statistics.
“A lot of people are afraid because we are seeing both the persistent nature of high levels of individual violence … alongside the weaponization of the state and state governments to target trans people,” Imara Jones, a Black trans journalist and founder and CEO of TransLash Media, told NBC News in a recent interview.
According to a study from the UCLA School of Law’s Williams Institute, transgender individuals are more than four times more likely to become violent crime victims than cisgarettes.
According to Jones,” The epidemic of crime against the transgender community that we’re witnessing is partly fueled by the lack of equality in transgender life.” They dismiss the murder of trans people as healthy or logical after hearing about it. And we wo n’t be able to put an end to the violence as long as we continue to do that.
