All federal government employees and federally funded entities would be prohibited from using anything other than a person’s legal name and the adjectives that correspond to the sex they were given at birth, according to bicameral legislation introduced by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texa ) and Andy Ogles, R-Tennessee.
In response to the Department of Health and Human Services ‘ ( HHS) new” Gender Identity Non-Discrimination and Inclusion Policy for Employees and Applicants” published in October, the bill, falsely referred to as the Safeguarding Free Speech Act, was introduced. By requiring that HHS people use the recommended names and pronouns of their coworkers, this legislation provides guidance to ensure adherence to national regulations prohibiting gender discrimination in employment and aims to maintain a workforce that is welcoming and inclusive for all employees.
The anti-transgender bill put forth by Cruz and Ogles would prohibit the use of federal funds to carry out such regulations and give federal workers and contractors the right to sue and collect damages of up to$ 100,000 if a federal agency requests that they use the preferred name and pronouns of their coworkers. Democratic representatives from Colorado, Arizona, Doug LaMalfa, Maryland, Andy Harris, and Illinois Mary Miller are among the senator’s co-sponsors.
Cruz has a history of supporting anti-LGBT causes; in the past, he helped pass legislation banning transgender activities in federal courts and endorsed an official who was known for opposing gay relationship. Additionally, he asserted that “participating in queer conduct is a decision” and reintroduced the State Marriage Defense Act in 2015, which would have left it up to the state to determine relationship.
Ogles is outspokenly anti-LGBT, and during Pride Month last June, he introduced two bills that would forbid the use of federal education money for drag queen performances or teaching in K–12 schools, as well as the development of any federal forms with female options other than “male” and “female.”
More than 500 anti-LGBT charges were introduced in state legislature across the nation during the previous legislative session, and more than 80 of them were passed.
