Charlotte A. Burrows, head of the EEOC, sends a text for the 2023 Transgender Day of Remembrance.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance is immediately. It is a somber occasion to remember those who died in the name of anti-transvestment violence and to challenge the agonizing reality of ongoing hostility and dangers to their safety. A shooter opened fire at Club Q in Colorado Springs just one month ago yesterday, killing five people—two of whom were transgender—and injuring numerous others. Only hours before Transgender Day of Remembrance was observed the previous year, that dreadful shooting happened.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 25 trans and female non-conforming individuals have died as of 2023. About 50 % of those victims were Black transgender women, and nearly 90 % were people of color.

We at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission of the United States ( EEOC ) oppose hatred and violence in all of its manifestations. We have a long-standing and unwavering determination to preventing prejudice against LGBTQI+ applicants and employees.

The Commission’s police interests include addressing discrimination and contempt directed against LGBTQI+ citizens, as reflected in the EEOC Strategic Enforcement Plan. Additionally, the Strategic Enforcement Plan expanded that class to contain LGBTQI+ people and reiterated the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable and underserved workers. In doing so, it acknowledged that LGBTQI+ employees have generally been underserved and may still be conscious of their rights or hesitant to workout them out of concern for retaliation.

Please visit our website about How to File a Charge of Employment Discrimination and take note of the deadlines for filing charges if you or someone you know has experienced discrimination at work or during the job application method because they are transgender—or for any other officially prohibited reason.

Together, we can completely understand America’s commitment to universal justice and equality. A gloomy reminder of the necessity of that reason is the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
