According to the far-right Christian organization One Million Moms, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be a “nonbinary and transgender extravaganza,” which will cause gay people all over the nation to protest in harmony.
OMM, a section of the fundamentalist philanthropic American Family Association, which the Southern Poverty Law Center refers to as an “hate group,” has been working for years to dissuade the media from covering LGBTQ+ issues by waging numerous pressure campaigns, generally in vain. However, the party’s most recent campaign this month went a step further by identifying two distinct nonbinary and gender-nonconforming Broadway performers by name.
During the November 23 march, actors from five Broadway musicals are scheduled to perform, but OMM concentrated on only two of them: gender-neutral actor Alex Newell of Shucked and intersex artist Justin David Sullivan of &, Juliet. A clear reference to the far-right story that trans people “groom” and date on children, OMM’s complaint referred to their participation as “liberal nonsense,” “evidence that the Macys festival “does not possess our childrens ‘ best interests in mind.”
OMM emphasized this point by pointing out Kim Petras ‘ 2021 festival performance as another instance of Macy’s “featured sex non-conforming performers.” ( For the group’s intended audience, the crime of including Petras seems self-evident. )
Undoubtedly, One Million Moms is a very humorous business, especially given that, as of the time of publication, the plea had just received slightly more than 22, 000 names. Right-wing organizations that specifically target LGBTQ+ people pose an ever-increasing security threat, however, as targeted anti-LGBT+ violence is on the rise across the United States. More than 30 institutions, hospitals, and people have reported weapon and death threats after being targeted in comments since 2022 by well-known anti-LGBT business Libs of TikTok and its leader Chaiya Raichik, according to data from the regulator group Media Matters for America.
We’ll still be a little disappointed that, like usual, very few things are actually as decadently, offensively queer as our least favorite pearl-cutter think they are, even if OMM’s most recent anti-trans salvo does n’t end up inspiring any physical harm. Next to the “blatantLGBTQ+” slice of Thor: Love and Thunder and the evil DuckTales indoctrination class, we might discover this famous” trans spectacular” in a hidden tomb. This timeframe might even be more interesting.
