First Lady shows strikes on LGBTQ+ privileges at HRC breakfast

First Lady Jill Biden addressed the audience at the Human Rights Campaign’s 2024 Los Angeles Dinner on March 23 and directly addressed the group of legislators who she described as MAGA fanatics who were attempting to instill fear in the LGBTQ area through congressional assaults on the disadvantaged society’s right.

Biden, in reference to the national budget deal passed by Congress on March 22 to minimize a government shutdown, told the audience:

” Today, this area is under assault. The freedom are being taken apart. Rights are eroding. More and more express regulations are being passed that target this group. We had to fight off more than 50 anti-gay amendments that Republicans tried to force into the state funding bill only last evening.

She continued,” These were extreme measures that were directly directed at this community; they would have restricted access to healthcare, undermined same-sex couples ‘ protections, and more.” And they served only one goal: To stretched hate and fear”.

Cautioning that history showed that “democracies do n’t disappear overnight”, Biden warned,” They disappear slowly. Delicately. Discreetly. A guide restrictions. A jury selection. A’ Do n’t Say Gay ‘ law. One group of people loses control of their freedom. And then another, and another. until one day when you wake up and discover that you no longer live in democracy.

The first woman also made notice of Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old transgender Oklahoma high school student whose death was declared a murder and had received federal interest:

” Laws and behaviour can have disastrous effects, hurt that parents are wracked by pain and cannot be undone.” Parents and grandparents like Sue Benedict, may Next rest in peace, and the many others who have lost LGBTQ kids to love, bullying, and death. Kids who have supported their children, loved them, and learned from them but who will never had another child with them in the future. This is our book of history— and it’s off to us how it ends”, she said.

Well, the MAGA fanatics are attempting to thwart these valiant victories and to halt all the advancement we’ve made. They want us to be afraid”, she stressed.

Biden then assured the audience:” They want to take our victories away, but we wo n’t let them. Your president wo n’t let them. I wo n’t let them. We’re going to battle. And we will win”.

Biden, referring to the national budget deal passed by Congress on March 22 to avoid a government shutdown, told the audience:

“Today, this community is under assault. Freedoms are being dismantled. Rights are eroding. More and more discriminatory laws are being passed targeting this community. We had to fend off over 50 anti-LGBTQ amendments that Republicans tried to insert into the state funding bill just last night.

Warning that history showed that “democracies don’t disappear overnight,” Biden cautioned, “They disappear slowly. Insidiously. Stealthily. A voter restriction. A jury selection. A ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law. One group of people loses a bit of their freedom. And then another, and another. Until one day, you wake up and realize you no longer live in a democracy.

The First Lady also acknowledged Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old transgender Oklahoma high school student whose death was ruled a homicide and had garnered national attention:

“Laws and actions can have devastating consequences, pain that parents are agonizing over and cannot be undone. Parents and grandparents like Sue Benedict, may Nex rest in peace, and the many others who have lost LGBTQ+ children to hate, bullying, and death. Parents who have supported their children, loved them, and learned from them but who will never have another future with them. This is our historical record— and it’s up to us how it ends,” she said.

“Now, the MAGA fanatics are trying to undermine these hard-won victories and halt all the progress we’ve made. They want us to be afraid,” she emphasized.

Biden then reassured the audience, “They want to roll back our victories, but we won’t let them. Your president won’t let them. I won’t let them. We’re going to fight. And we will prevail.”
