Hefazat-e-Islam urges govt not to formulate law for transgender people

Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh urged Bangladesh government to refrain from formulating law for transgender people.

Hefazat Amir (chief) Shah Muhibbullah Babunagri and secretary general Sajidur Rahman came up with the call in a statement on Tuesday night.

In the statement, Hefazat urged the government to refrain from drafting and implementing the Transgender Rights Protection Act 2023.

The leaders termed the transgender doctrine as ‘curse’, saying that the transgender is a faith-destroying doctrine and it is a form of mental distortion.

The presence of the believer of the doctrine is seen through various means and they are also raising various demands to the government, it said.

The Islamist organisation also condemned the termination of the BRAC University teacher Asif Mahtab.

The statement said that a university teacher can speak freely on various issues of the country.

‘BRAC University has shown extreme audacity by dismissing lecturer Asif Mahtab from his post for speaking on social and religious issues,’ it said.

The decision they have taken has shocked the teacher community and the nation. Apart from immediate reinstatement of the teacher, the BRAC University authorities should apologise to the nation.
