International Transgender Day of Remembrance NDP Statement

Jagmeet Singh, the president of the NDP in Canada, said the following:

” Today, we honor the existence of two-spirit, transgender, and gender-dividend people who lost their lives in the previous 12 months. The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves as a reminder of the very real dangers to individual security that two-spirited, transgender, and gender-dividend people in Canada and around the planet continue to face.

Over 94 % of the 320 transgender people murdered over the past year were transgender women. This number alone is extremely threatening, but we’re also beginning to notice a worrying trend of politicians and leaders in Canada using language that is more controversial and cruel toward people who are two-spirit, trans, and gender varied.

This vile speech encourages prejudice and makes people feel uneasy. This has gotten out of hand to the point where Traditional premiers across Canada are endangering children’s health and independence, which cannot be permitted.

The New Democrats will continue to fight for more robust protections for Canadians who are two-spirit, trans, and female different. In their own homes and communities, nobody really feel uncomfortable.

We are urging the Democratic government to take a stand against the department and the rising tide of 2SLGBTQI+ hatred in Canada and to ensure access to reassuring and gender-affirming healthcare today and every day.

Now is a day to honor the resilience and fortitude of the 2SLGBTQI+ society, even though it’s also about remembering and mourning those we’ve lost. We’ll keep fighting for a safer, better prospect because the new Democrats are here for you.
