Marcos is praised for issuing a directive advancing LGBTQIA + rights.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was praised by the civil rights organization LGBT Pilipinas for being the first leader of the Philippines to issue an executive order ( EO ) establishing a special committee to further advocate for the rights and affairs of those who identify as LGBTQIA+.

Marcos issued EO 51, which strengthens the nation’s Diversity and Inclusion Program, reinstitutes the Inter-Agency Committee on Diversity, and establishes a special committee on LGBTQIA + matters.

” In Spanish history, this is a first.” Dindi Tan, the federal president of LGBT Pilipinas, said in a speech on Tuesday that this historic development is” a dream come true for our community—the beginning of many wonderful things to come.”

A chair with the title of undersecretary will serve as the specific committee’s president. There will be three individuals with the position of assistant minister.

Tan claimed that she personally pushed for the committee’s creation during a Pride celebration held at the Palace in June, and that First Lady Marie Louise” Liza” Araneta- Marcos “gladly welcomed” the concept.

The Chief Executive stated in the order that” to strengthen existing mechanisms to address the continued discrimination being experienced by the members of the LGBTQIA + community” was necessary. Additionally, Marcos wished to “ensure the nation’s ongoing adherence to its responsibilities under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.”

According to Tan,” President Marcos ‘ response to our elegance shows a commitment to promoting equality, understanding, and justice for Filipinos, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.”

This executive order has significant ramifications for the Philippines ‘ ongoing struggle for LGBTQIA + rights and equality. We are laying the groundwork for well-informed plans and tactical initiatives that will improve the lives of LGBTQIA+ people by creating a dedicated commission, she continued.

Marcos ‘ action, according to Tan, represents” a liberal step ahead in dismantling restrictions, challenging prejudices, and promoting a culture that celebrates diversity.”

” This will improve our world as a whole as well as help people feel more at home.” To make sure that the voices and needs of the LGBTQIA + community are heard and effectively addressed, we look forward to working with the committee, she said.

Tan stated that his organization is still “dedicated to working with the authorities, civil society, and all partners to develop a Philippines where everyone can live without fear of discrimination.”
