Rita Hester, who was assassinated in 1998, is honored annually with the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which is observed all over the world.
According to Kelsey Murray, vice chair of the Salem Human Rights Commission and member of its LGBTQIA + Intersectional Rights Task Force,” this day serves as a reminder of ongoing discrimination and violence that the transgender community faces and the importance of advocating for their rights and safety.“
It is also a day to honor the transgender community’s fortitude and strength in the face of hardship, according to Murray. The” Transgender Day of Remembrance is a call to action for all of us to work towards an equitable and only earth where everyone can live free from fear and bias”
Murray claimed that while there has been recent progress toward the participation of transgender and gender-diverse individuals, there is still much work to be done. The prevalence of murder, discrimination, and alienation among members of the community is still higher. Numerous politicians from all over the nation have pushed anti-trans costs.
According to Murray,” It is crucial for all of us to stand in solidarity with the trans community and to speak out against hatred and intolerance.” We you” make a world where every person is valued and respected, irrespective of their identity identity” by working together.
The LGBTQIA + Intersectional Rights Task Force will hold an event on Monday, November 20, at 7 p.m. at the Salem Public Library’s Loucks Auditorium to remember the lost and pledge to a better future. At http ://bit.ly/TDOR2023, people can also watch videos on YouTube.
