The following statement was made by Tracy Anne McPhee, Minister of Health and Social Services, and Jeanie McLean, Director of the Ladies and Gender Equity Directorate:
” We observe Transgender Day of Remembrance every November 20.” We redouble our efforts to ensure that trans, Two-Spirit+, and female non-conforming people can live their lives to the fullest without encountering hatred, discrimination, abuse, or assault on this day as we mourn and remember those whose lives were lost to violence.
However, people who identify as transgender, Two-Spirit+, or gender non-conforming continue to be at considerably higher risk of abuse and violence. Compared to any other class in our culture, transgender women of color experience the highest rates of gender-based violence. Their crossing of prejudice, stigmatization, and sexism is the source of their abuse and violence.
” Recently, there has been a rise in policy and political agendas in Canada that target the right of trans people and jeopardize the community’s safety.” A culture of intolerance and isolation that encourages acts of bias, abuse, and assault toward the trans community is a result of those pushing for discriminatory policies that focus on transgendered rights.
Through the LGBTQ2S+ Inclusion Action Plan, our government committed to working with the 2SLGBTQIA + community in the region in 2021 to ensure that they have access to the same rights, representation, and services that many of us take for granted. We still stand by what we say. The implementation of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policy ( SOGI ) is one way we support and celebrate the diversity of students in Yukon schools. This plan supports all kids ‘ freedom to accept and express their sexual orientation and gender identity. Additionally, it makes sure that college initiatives promote equality and non-discrimination as well as the social duty of adults to recognize and address unfair attitudes and behaviors. The inclusion and equality of transgender youth as well as the 2SLBGTQIA + community are the main goals of this policy.
” Colleges have access to SOGI sources that support the equitable distribution of the syllabus.” Anxiety, ignorance, and unfavorable discrimination are frequently the root causes of prejudice and discrimination. Kids are less likely to encounter bullying or bully their classmates when they have a better understanding of what it means to get 2SLGBTQIA+. Teachers can create and promote diverse school environments with the help of SOGI resources.
” We can work towards a more equitable and inclusive community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, where we celebrate transgender individuals for their accomplishments and efforts, rather than lamenting their deaths,” through training and cooperation. Transgender Day of Remembrance continues to be a solemn time for reflection on life that have been unduly cut short by violence and hatred, despite the fact that there is much to enjoy in the Yukon regarding incorporation, variety, and the execution of our LGBTQ2S+ Inclusion Action Plan.
” We understand that many people are having difficult days, and we urge you to ask for assistance if you need it.
