Joe Biden has been passionate in his support of transgender people. Even when it is not popular or easy.
For example, as NBC News reported in March 2021:
Biden issues first presidential proclamation on Trans Day of Visibility
President Joe Biden on Wednesday issued the first presidential proclamation recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility.
The day is dedicated to celebrating transgender people and bringing awareness to the discrimination and violence they face every day.
In his proclamation, Biden said Trans Day of Visibility recognizes the generations of activism by transgender and nonbinary people.
Biden said his administration has already started implementing new policies to protect trans people, such as the executive order he issued on the first day of his presidency to expand discrimination protections for LGBTQ people under federal laws such as the Affordable Housing Act.
In addition, on the same day:
Biden admin scraps Trump’s restrictions on transgender troops
The Pentagon on Wednesday scrapped restrictions on transgender troops imposed by the Trump administration, and unveiled new rules designed to end discrimination and provide medical care for those service members.
Pentagon spokesperson Joe Kirby said, “The secretary of defense strongly believes that the all-volunteer force thrives when it is composed of diverse Americans who can meet the high standards for military service,” [adding] that an “inclusive force” strengthens U.S. national security.
And only a month later,
Biden to transgender Americans: ‘Your president has your back.’
In his first joint address to Congress, President Joe Biden on Wednesday sent an unequivocal message to the transgender community: “To all transgender Americans watching at home, especially the young people. You’re so brave. I want you to know your president has your back.”
His remarks come amid a wave of state bills targeting transgender people, particularly trans youth. As of this week, at least six states have signed bills into law that restrict gender-affirming care for minors or ban trans student athletes from competing on school sports teams that align with their gender identity. On Wednesday, hours before Biden’s speech, West Virginia’s governor signed a bill into law that prevents transgender students from competing on girls sports teams from middle school through college.
A year later, the Biden administration was taking action, as reported by the Texas Tribune:
Biden signs order to protect transgender children as Texas continues efforts to restrict gender-affirming care
President Joe Biden signed an executive order Wednesday to enhance protections for transgender children and take steps to ban conversion therapy as efforts continue in Texas and other states to restrict gender-affirming medical care.
The executive order calls on the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services to increase access to gender-affirming care and develop ways to counter state efforts aimed at limiting such treatments for transgender minors.
Biden signed the order Wednesday afternoon, joined by six LGBTQ teens who were reportedly from Texas and Florida.
“My message to all the young people: Just be you,” Biden said to a crowd of members of Congress, administration officials and LGBTQ advocates. “You are loved. You are heard. You are understood. You do belong.”
Is there still more work to be done? 100%! Lots more work. But Biden has done so much more than many people guessed could be done. He deserves a lot of credit. AND he deserves to be re-elected.
