State leaders are reluctant to change the rules as a little-known concept threatens transgender Ohioans’ candidacies

A surge in trans Ohioans hoping to run for state government this year is being hampered by a little-known Ohio law that requires would-be individuals to share any other titles they’ve gone by in recent years.

The law itself isn’t the problem because it mandates that would-be candidates list any previous names they’ve used in the previous five years on their campaign petitions and declaration of candidacy. Three trans congressional candidates who have either already been disqualified or soon could be for breaking the requirement claim that the issue is that they weren’t made aware of the law until it was too late.
