Public authorities in Tennessee are now able to refuse to marry someone at their choice for any purpose, sparking issue for gay couples applying for a wedding certificate.

Republican Governor Bill Lee signed House Bill 878 into rules on 21 February, which went into effect instantly. The act states that” a individual may not be required to ordain a marriage”.

According to the condition code, simply official publics, authorities officials and religious figures may attend a marriage in Tennessee.

State Representative Monty Fritts, who sponsored the costs in the House, said to CNN in February last month regarding the bill:” As cultural views change about what constitutes a marriage, officiants may be able to fail to sanction marriages that are contrary to their beliefs”

” The state has a responsibility to protect the practice of religious ideas. Those with the authority to perform legal rites would also be permitted to refuse to sanction relationship for reasons of morality”.

While the law does not provide a blanket ban on gay marriage licenses in Tennessee, legal experts believe that the law shows that for rights for the LGBTQ+ group “are often at risk”.

Anthony Snyder, past mediator and present Divorce Specialist at affectionate, told PinkNews:” Unfortunately, the latest news about Tennessee is a stark reminder of how we can never believe progress is continuous.

” The]law ] is a massive step backwards and highlights that the hard- fought rights of the LGBTQ+ community are always at risk,” Snyder added.

” Similar freedom means simply that. The laws which govern marriage and divorce may be applied without bias. If this does happen in America, one of the most established countries in the world, what’s to stop other states from following fit?

” If the spouses of those who identify as LGBTQ+ are now at hazard, it’s hard to believe they will stop it. We cannot believe that other rights are protected and need to consider about how this may affect parental obligations and children as well.

” Marriage and equal relationship rights should n’t be a luxury, everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation should be able to start, and end a marriage as and when they please, “he concluded.
