Doctor Who’s offerings for the 60th anniversary did not disappoint in the least. All the things we adore about this series were given to us, including the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate as the Doctor and Donna.
Yasmin Finney, the Heartstopper star who portrayed Rose, a transgender character, was also introduced to us. Rose is Donna’s daughter, and we first met her in “The Star Beast,” the first of the three specials.
There were a few people who chose to speak out against the BBC’s decision to have trans representation, despite the fact that the majority of people absolutely adored every aspect of this show, including Finney. The BBC is not putting up with any of the complaints, despite the fact that they have come in. See what they had to say below for more!
Finney’s character was criticized for being “inappropriate” and “anti-male.” The BBC received about 144 emails from people who were upset and disappointed about Rose being transgender, according to Deadline.
“As regular viewers of Doctor Who will be aware, the show has and will always continue to boldly enjoy diversity and reflect the world we live in.” The BBC made the decision to speak out against the complaints in an update on its site. “We never lose sight of the information in our episodes.”
The 144 complaints made up a relatively small portion of the 7.6 million+ people who watched “The Star Beast.” There are those who despise Rose, her plot, and everything Doctor Who stands for, but there are a lot more supporters.
During a press conference last month, current (and former) showrunner Russell T Davies also discussed the complaints. “There are newspapers that are filled with utter hatred, poison, loss, and violence who would prefer to see that kind of thing removed from the screen. Shame on you and good fortune to you in your lonely life!” Davies, you said it well, also said!
We must quickly shout out the triumphant return of Doctor Who and the appearance of a brand-new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, who made his formal debut in the holiday special, while the haters continue to hate. I can’t wait to see what Gatwa brings to the table because I am so excited for this new chapter in the series. He currently has my heart, and I think the Doctor Who family will enjoy having him around.
Keep an eye out for news about Gatwa’s first season premiere, which is anticipated maybe this year!
The House of the Dragon season finale’s original storyboard was significantly more dramatic. Dark. Next. The House of the Dragon season finale’s original storyboard was much more serious.
