The Epidemic of Violence Against the Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Community in the United States: The 2023 Report was published on Trans Day of Remembrance by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation ( HRC ), the public education division of the country’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer ( LGBTQ+ ) civil rights organization.
Since 2013, HRC has documented the deaths of 335 transgender and gender non-conforming victims of fatal violence, including at least 33 fatalities in the previous 12 months ( from November 21, 2022, through November 20, 2023 ). We use the phrase “at least” because a lot of murders are either unreported or incorrectly reported, or victim misdiagnoses cause recognition delays. Yet, we do know that Black trans women were disproportionately affected by the 33 persons we lost in the previous year, who were mostly younger and people of color. Numerous patients were killed by a friend, family member, or romantic or romantic partner, and the majority of those deaths involved firearms.
Over the past 12 times:
- People of color made up nine out of ten (90.9 % ) trans and gender non-conforming victims.
- Transgender women made up seven in ten ( 69.7 % ) of the population.
- Black transgender women made up more than six out of ten ( 61.8 % ) of the population.
- 78.8 % of respondents were under the age of 35.
- Nearly half ( 45.5 % ) of those who had a known killer were killed by their friend, family member, or intimate partner who was sexually or romantically involved.
- More than half ( 51.5 % ) were initially misidentified in news reports or by the police.
