A new research found that The New York Times did not offer a trans man in 66 % of its tales about anti-trans legislation from February 15, 2023 to February 15, 2024, according to a new study released today by Media Matters for America and GLAAD.

- Only one member of the community was quoted in one of the 19 reports covering anti-trans regulations from July through September.
- 18 % of the comments contained anti-trans misinformation without sufficient fact-checking or environment.
- The New York Times ‘ coverage of a Florida law that forbids gender-affirming care for minors regularly quoted DeSantis as spreading anti-trans misinformation as an example of this. In one example, the Times quoted, without concern or adjustment, the governor’s bogus claim that “gender- asserting care” is a euphemism for” sex- change operations”. DeSantis ‘ false and unsubstantiated claim that providing gender-affirming care to children amounts to” sexualizing” them was quoted in two other articles. Only one of the articles makes it clear that the care is mainstream care supported by every major medical association or that it can involve years of non-invasive care and mental health care.
- Six of the articles omitted sources’ sources ‘ anti-translating histories and excluded extremist rhetoric or actions.
- An instance of this is provided by an April 12 article about a North Dakota law that forbids trans girls and women from playing women’s sports. In the story, The New York Times quoted a member of North Dakota Can, an organization that has falsely called LGBTQ pride “predatory” and has ranted about” child predator apologists” in” Big Education”. Despite the organization’s documented record of false rhetoric, The New York Times merely identified it as a” conservative advocacy group”.
