New Delhi: Harish was much when he came out about his masculinity. A disorganized wave of thoughts followed. I advised him to seek medical attention. I started looking for causes that would ensure my disbelief”, says Padma Iyer, Harish’s family. She also attributed Harish’s uncle’s times of physical abuse to him.
But, soon, she knew she was in neglect. She made the decision to support him and accept the truth. My baby matters to me above anything else,’ she says. Ever since, Ms Iyer, in an effort to understand her child and the LGBTQIA + community better, has accompanied her child to awareness sessions and events.

Dr Bela Sharma did the same. She had no idea what sex her child was until she learned about her child’s female. Dr. Bela, the further director of domestic medicine at Fortis, says,”…
My relationship with my baby has no significantly changed. I am a family. and Tia is my baby. It does not matter whether male or female, female natural, linear, or non- linear.
Ms Iyer and Dr Sharma’s incredible method is not restricted to their kids. They have contributed to the empowerment of the LGBTQIA + community. They just merit the Vidya Award, which was recently presented at the Transgender Awards 2024.
Ms Iyer feels that events like these that are focused on the LGBTQIA + community are important. They honor the different personalities and contributions of LGBTQIA+ people, their friends, and families.
Also after 20 years, anyone discusses my boy’s sexual identity boldly in our home. My brother and I are still fighting in a silent fight. Similar events help to promote understanding and visibility as well.
Dr Bela agrees. She claims that Transgender Prizes are a powerful tool for promoting fairness and inclusion for all community members. She claims that the awards ceremony is also a source of motivation for my baby as well as for the family and society as a whole.
