The city council in California’s money, Sacramento, have unanimously voted to declare the town a” sanctuary area for transgender people”.
The resolution, which goes into effect immediately, was approved by council members on Tuesday ( 26 March ), making sure that council resources wo n’t be used to deceive transgender people seeking gender affirming care or to work with those who want to impose laws that criminalize the care in other states.
It comes as trans people in the US are increasingly subject to unfriendly legislation, with some lawmakers specifically attempting to restrict access to gender-affirming care for adults and youth. This is in addition to costs that restrictions transgender people from single-sex spaces, and prohibit them from participating in sports.
The resolution states that California has led the charge against claims from across the country for preventing transgender people from getting treatment, but that “many states are moving in the opposite direction.”

Councilmember Katie Valenzuela, who proposed the estimate, said the decision was written and informed by transgender community leaders after its passage on X/Twitter.
It was suggested in response to the rise in laws in our nation aimed to limit or totally obstruct access to gender-affirming care, Valenzuela wrote.
The City has taken a step beyond state laws and sent a strong message to everyone in our society that we are a safe area for everyone by affirming our commitment to supporting our LGBTQ+ community and ensuring that no city resources or staff time will be used to support maintain these dangerous laws in different jurisdictions.
She continued,” Tonight’s evidence in support of this decision was a powerful reminder of the resilience and love in our society to protect our trans neighbors.”
