After its Republican-controlled government passed a bill on Friday mandating that people use restrooms and locker rooms in public schools and government-owned buildings that match their gender assigned at birth, Utah is on track to become the next state to govern restroom access for transgender people.
According to the law, transgender people can protect themselves against a claim that they are in the wrong bath by demonstrating they underwent gender-affirming operation and changed the sex on their baby document. Many trans people don’t want to have surgery, and opponents noted that not all states permit people to change their birth certificates.
