Utah is on track to become the next position to control transgender people’s access to restrooms. Its Republican-controlled government passed a law on Friday mandating that students use restrooms and locker rooms in public schools and government-owned properties that match the gender they were given at birth. According to the measure, trans people can prove they underwent gender-affirming operation and changed their intercourse on their birth certificate in order to refute a claim that they used an illegal restroom. Additionally, the law mandates that public institutions develop “privacy plans” for transgender students and other students who might find it difficult to use communal restrooms, such as a university restroom.
