State lawmakers in Utah are attempting to stop transgender people from using some public restrooms, locker rooms, and changing rooms. Salt Lake City, Utah, January 25, 2024 (Gephardt Daily).

The Utah Senate passed the most recent version of HB257 on Thursday, with two Republicans joining Democrats in opposition. It was co-sponsored by Sen. Daniel McCay, R-Riverton, and Rep. Kera Birkeland.

In the beginning, HB257 aimed to stop people from using public restrooms that weren’t the sex they were assigned at birth.

Under the most recent version of the bill McCay presented on Thursday, transgender people are not permitted to use gender-specific restrooms, locker rooms, or changing areas in federal buildings and other publicly funded facilities.

The act is then going back to the House to go over McCay’s changes before being sent to Gov. Spencer Cox for his signature. The House earlier approved an earlier version of the bill by a vote of 52 to 17.
