According to recent poll, President Joe Biden and Donald Trump will likely face off in a fiercely contested fight in the 2024 presidential vote. Americans were asked in a recent YouGov poll how each candidate’s views on abortion, immigration, climate change, and other problems compared to those of other appointed party members. For each problem, the poll asked whether Trump is more liberal or less liberal than additional elected Republicans, and whether Biden or Trump are more liberal—less liberal, or roughly the same—or both.
Most Americans who have an opinion believe that Biden and Trump hold positions comparable to those of the majority of their celebrations ‘ elected officials. Republicans are also more good than Democrats and Independents to view Trump as more traditional than other Republicans, despite the fact that a much larger percentage of Republicans view Biden as being more liberal than the other appointed Democrats. Age also affects how people perceive Biden and Trump, with 18- to 29-year-olds being more likely than older Americans to believe that the latter is less democratic than another elected Democrats. Biden and Trump are most likely to be perceived as more liberal and conservative by Americans 65 and older than by other elected members of their events.
Adult Americans believe that Biden is more liberal than other elected Democrats on the 10 issues YouGov asked about, while 8 % to 13 % believe he is less liberal and between 38 % and 49 % believe they are roughly on par with other Democrats.
Biden is more liberal than another Democratic leaders on immigration, government spending, and LGBT problems, according to Americans, who are most likely to believe this. Only 25 % of Americans and 13 % of Democrats agree that Biden is the least liberal when it comes to criminal justice, respectively. His positions on abortion ( 48 % ), health care ( 49 % ), and civil rights are most likely to be compared to those of other elected Democrats.
Only 8 % of Americans believe Trump to be less liberal than another elected Republicans on the issue of immigration, making him by far the most conservative candidate out of the ten problems polled. Between 20 % and 29 % of Americans believe Trump is more conservative than other Republicans on the remaining issues, while between 35 % and 47 % believe his opinions are similar to those of the majority of elected Republicans.
More Americans view Trump as less liberal than another elected Democrats on concerns besides immigration than the percentage of Americans who view Biden as being less liberal than some Democrats. Americans are most likely to believe that Trump is less liberal than other Republican leaders on issues like abortion, gun control, government spending, and climate shift.
How much more plausible Americans are to say Biden or Trump is more liberal or conservative than other people of his party than they are, or vice versa, depending on the voting effects, can result in their respective online liberalism and conservatism values for each topic.
Democrats are much more likely than Democrats and Independents to believe that Biden is more liberal than another Democrats who have been elected. For instance, Democrats are just 9 factors more likely than Republicans to claim that Biden is less liberal than other Democrats on immigration, despite the fact that Republicans have a 52 percentage point higher likelihood of doing so. Republicans also consider Biden to be more liberal than other Democrats when it comes to taxes, LGBT issues, and government spending ( 48 ).
Democrats are also much more likely to say that Biden is more liberal than other Democrats when it comes to taxes, LGBT issues, and government spending ( 12 % ) than they are when saying that he is less liberal. Democrats are the only partisan group where the majority of voters believe Biden is less liberal than elected Democrats on these issues than other Democrats. This is true for guns ( 1 ) and criminal justice ( 2 ).
Democrats are also more likely than Democrats and Independents to claim that Trump is more traditional than another elected Republicans, but Trump has a much smaller partisanship than Biden does. The biggest difference in government spending is that Republicans are 23 points more likely to claim that Trump is more conservative than other Republicans than to believe that he is less conservative ( a net conservatism score of + 23 ), as opposed to Independents ‘ and Democrats ‘ net scores of -1 and -3, respectively.
However, Democrats ( +21 and +8 ) are more likely than Republicans ( +6 and -1 ) to claim that Trump is more conservative than other elected Republicans when it comes to climate change and LGBT issues. Democrats, Independents, and Republicans all have a similar tendency to believe that Trump is more liberal than other Republicans when it comes to taxes and legal rights.
The two individuals are perceived differently by Americans of various years. Younger Americans are less likely than older Americans to believe that Biden is a more progressive Democrat than other Democrats. For instance, Americans 45 and older are 39 factors more likely to believe that Biden is more liberal on LGBT issues than another elected Democrats, while this difference is only 1 level among younger individuals.
Among people under 45, Biden has significantly lower democracy ratings. Younger people are equally possible to claim that Biden is less democratic than other Democrats on these problems than that he is more liberal on climate change, fees, health care, and guns. On the criminal justice scale for younger adults, Biden receives a negative liberalism score (-3 ). For each of these issues, adults over 45 have democracy ratings that are higher than + 20.
Additionally, older Americans—those 45 and older—are more likely than younger people to believe that Trump is a more traditional Republican candidate. The variations are smaller, though. For instance, older adults have a slightly higher score ( +14 ), and adults under 45 are more likely to view Trump as more conservative than other Republicans on health care. On LGBT problems and abortion, younger people are about as likely to view Trump as less liberal than other Republicans as they are to see him as more traditional.

Methodology: 1, 000 adult U.S. individuals participated in the YouGov poll that was conducted online from September 26 to 30, 2023. Sample corresponding was used to choose respondents from YouGov’s opt-in section. The 2019 American Community Survey was used to create a random sample that was categorized based on gender, age, race, training, geographic location, and voting membership. The trial was weighted for both polls based on gender, age, race, education, participation in the 2020 presidential election, and present voter registration status. The 2019 American Community Survey provides the statistical weight goals. Additionally, the test was weighted using baseline group identification, which is the respondent’s most recent response provided before November 1, 2022, and is based on the 33 % Democratic and 31 % Republican estimated circulation at the time. The general sample’s margin of error is about 4 %.
